Proverbs 11 Prayers and Confessions

Lord, you declare that false balances and unjust weights are an abomination to yourself. So, I solemnly commit to do business without cheating or deceiving others, or representing things to be other than the way they really are. I pray you will find delight in the way I do business, in Jesus’ name, Amen. (vs 1)

Lord, open my eyes to the value of lowliness, for “with the lowly is wisdom”. Give me this wisdom. At the same time, I reject the coming of pride, which brings shame. (vs 2)

For Lovers of Pleasure

As I see it, a lot of pleasures are of course God-given and its good for us to give thanks for them. But I want to say something to people who believe that their whole pursuit in life should basically be for pleasure in one form or another. I would say it is a pretty popular view and one worth addressing.

An early Christian leader, Paul, wrote that if there is no resurrection, “Let us eat, drink and be merry, for tomorrow we die”. In other words, if this life is all there is to live for, then let’s live it up and enjoy it.

The Best Goal for a Christian – is it YOUR goal?

If you read motivational books, no doubt you have heard of the importance of setting goals. Without setting goals we tend to drift and we don’t achieve great results. Without strong goals all we tend to do is “get by”.

Some motivational books encourage us to choose any goal we like. Could be a large house in a good neighborhood paid off, or a certain kind of car, or holiday. It might be a career achievement. The books then go on to give you some principles through which you can achieve your stated goals.

The Warnings of the Book of Proverbs

Don’t join with violent men to rob people – if you do it will kill you.
(Proverbs 1:8-19)

If you keep refusing to listen to Wisdom, one day you will have calamity, terror will come upon you, and then it will be too late – Wisdom will just laugh at you and mock you. (Proverbs 1:24-28)

Turn away from Wisdom, and it will kill you. (Proverb 1:32).

Be complacent in your rebellion against God, and it will destroy you.

God wants you to be spiritually rich

God is the Awesome Creator of the Universe. He made the universe, and then chose a tiny speck on it to host His most special creation – human beings. The many things that are unique to the earth and unique in our human DNA and makeup point to the design of a Loving Creator.

The Bible teaches that God is love. God loves you. He wants you to enjoy His love. The greatest fulfillment that anyone can know is to give and receive God’s love. We were made by God for that.

Losing our Lives for the Gospel

When he had called the people to Himself, with his disciples also, He said to them, “Whoever desires to come after Me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross, and follow Me.”

“For whoever desires to save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for My sake and the gospel’s will save it.” (Mark 8:34,35)

We can see here plainly enough that the recommendations of Jesus Christ fly in the face of everything that our natural instincts tell us.

And the Lord God commanded the man, saying, ” Of every tree of the garden you may freely eat; but of the tree of the
