From “Catch the Glorious Fire” by Ps Paul Quadros – Chapter 29
In
order to increase the fire of the Holy Spirit in our lives we must
become overcomers, especially in the areas of sin and temptations.
We must be extremely careful not to quench the flow of the Spirit in
our lives (Eph 4:29-30). As faith and love gradually grow in our
lives, so also the fire of revival must increase and spread
everywhere.
If
we have to keep growing, we must keep going after the Lord. As we
follow the Lord we will overcome sin and darkness in our lives. As He
said “whoever follows me will not walk in darkness but have the
light of life (John 8: 12) NIV. Every bit of darkness must be
dispelled out of our lives as it is written “light shines in the
darkness and darkness has not overcome” (John 1:5) NIV. And if
we have to keep going, then we must keep following the Lord. Jesus
said, He who follows me will not walk in darkness, but will have
the light of life (John 8:12).
The
Word of God also says in 1John 1:5, “God is light and in Him
there is no darkness at all.” If we walk in the light as he is in
the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of
Jesus His son purifies us from all sin (vs.7). And it continues
to say, “My dear children, I write this to you so that you will
not sin (1 John 2:1).
Hence
we know that God has given us absolute victory over sin through the
cross. Again the bible says, “Knowing this, that our old man was
crucified with Him; that the body of sin might be done away with,
that we should no longer be slaves of sin.” (Romans 6:6) NKJV.
Also
Romans chapter 6 continues to tell us about the gift of eternal life
(Rom 6:23). In that it also speaks about our victory over sin. As it
is written, “But now having been set free from sin and having
become slaves of God you have your fruit to holiness and at the end,
everlasting life”. (Rom 6:22) NKJV
Sometimes
our minds are bombarded with wrong thoughts, especially when we are
in the battlefield. And the only thing that can deliver us is our
absolute dependence on the mercy and the grace of God. It is written,
“For sin shall not have dominion over you, for you are not under
the law, but under grace” (Rom 6: 14) NKJV. Through His grace we
are saved, and also through His grace alone we are victorious
(Eph 2:4, 8).
It
is also important for us to walk in the Spirit if we need to have and
maintain this victory over sin. As it is written, “For if we
live according to the flesh you will die; but if by the Spirit you
put to death the deeds of the body, you will live. For as many as are
led by the Spirit of God, these are sons of God.” (Rom 8:13,
14) NKJV. And it is also written, “Walk in the Spirit and you
shall not fulfill the lust of the flesh.” (Gal 5:16) NKJV.
If
then you were raised with Christ, seek those things which are above,
where Christ is, sitting at the right hand of God (Col 3:1-4) NKJV.
When we find our identity in the resurrection of Christ we are able
to set our minds on things above and not on the things on the earth
for we are hidden with Christ in God (Col 2: 2-3) NKJV. This new
mindset (attitude of our minds) will give us the strength to overcome
the flesh by the help of the Spirit, as we are able to put to death
whatever belongs to our earthly nature. (Col 3:5)
Hence,
“Let us throw off everything that hinders, and the sin that so
easily entangles. And let us run with perseverance the race marked
out for us.” (Heb 12: 1, 2) NIV. And in our race let us also be
willing to suffer. He who partakes in the sufferings of Christ will
also participate in His victory. It is written “Therefore, since
Christ suffered in His body, arm yourselves also with the same
attitude, because those who have suffered in their bodies are done
with sin.” (1 Peter 4:1) NIV. As we press on in this victory by
His grace we will not only be able to grow in this fire but also will
be able to spread the fire wherever we go.
