God’s Word teaches us who we are
Without the Word of God, we would not know who we are as human beings. People who reject the Word of God have all kinds of beliefs about our identity. Some will state that we are animals, primates, descendants of some kind of monkey. If that is the case, then its no big deal if a few primates have to be killed off. There is no immortal soul in that case. But God’s Word teaches us that we were made in the image of God.
“Then God said, “Let Us make man in Our image, according to Our likeness; let them have dominion over the fish of the sea, over the birds of the air, and over the cattle, over all[b] the earth and over every creeping thing that creeps on the earth.” (Genesis 1:26)
Because we are made in the image of God, and because all our fellow human beings are made like that, we know that we should treat people with respect. We should treat our fellow human beings as valuable and significant.
We also know because of this one fact that we ourselves are valuable, we are special, and we should therefore not allow low self-esteem of feelings of inferiority or self-hatred to have a place in our minds and hearts.
Beyond that, once we are adopted again as sons into God’s family through the sacrificial death of the Lord Jesus Christ who opened the way for us by paying our huge debt to God, we learn who we are in Christ. The Scriptures tell us many wonderful things about our new identity in Christ. We are royal priests, sons of God, the body of Christ, the people of God, the apprentices of Jesus Christ and much more. Learning these things and knowing these things from the Bible releases a great power in and through our lives which will bless others.
It is true that as a man thinks in his heart, so he is. Having a correct understanding of our identity through the knowledge God’s Word imparts is extremely powerful.
