Jesus in the Koran (Qu’ran)

Some observations by Marlies Zechner

1/ Jesus Christ born of God's Holy Spirit

21/ The Prophets Al-Anbiya
91. And (remember) her who guarded her chastity: We breathed into her of Our Spirit, and We made her and her son a Sign for all peoples.

66/ Prohibition – Al-Tahrim
12. And Mary the daughter of Imran, who guarded her chastity: and We breathed into her (body) of Our Spirit; and she testified to the truth and the words of her Lord and of His Revelations, and was one of the devout (servants).

If Mary didn't have sex with any man, and the child in her womb was of the Holy Spirit of God, who then was the Father?

5/ The Table – Al-Maidah
17.(19) In blasphemy indeed are those that say that Allah is Christ the son of Mary. "Who then hath the least power against Allah, if His Will were to destroy Christ the son of Mary, his mother, and all–everyone that is on the earth? For to Allah belongeth the dominion of the heavens and the earth, and all that is between. He createth what He pleaseath. For Allah hath power over all things."

And it pleased Almighty God to place Jesus Christ, by his Holy Spirit, into the womb of Mary.

2/ Jesus Christ is holy, without sin

19/ Maryam
19. (The angel is speaking to Mary) He said: "Nay, I am only a messenger from thy Lord, (to announce) to thee the gift of a holy son."
Muhammad however, needs forgiveness for his sins.
48/ Al-Fath 1-2
1/ Verily, We have given you (O Muhammad) a manifest victory.
2/ That Allah may forgive you your sins of the past and the future, and complete His Favour on you, and guide you on the Straight Path.

3/ Jesus Christ strengthened with the Holy Spirit

2/ The Cow – Al-Baqarah
2:87. We gave Moses the Book and followed him up with a succession of Apostles: We gave Jesus the son of Mary clear (signs) and strengthened him with the Holy Spirit.

2:253 …to Jesus the son of Mary We gave clear (signs), and strengthened him with the Holy Spirit. (p23)

No one else in the Koran, is shown to be strengthened with the Holy Spirit.
According to the Koran, God breathed his Spirit into every human being to bring them to life, but he only strengthened Jesus Christ with his Holy Spirit.

4/ Jesus Christ the Messiah

Messiah according to the dictionary means:
anointed, The deliverer and saviour promised to the Hebrews; Christ, the Anointed; the Saviour of the world.

3/The Imran
3:45. (Remember) when the angels said: "O Maryam (Mary) Verily, Allah gives you the glad tidings of a Word (Be!"–and he was! i.e. Jesus the son of Mary, his name will be the Messiah (Jesus) the son of Mary held in honour in this world and in the Hereafter, …

3:47. She said: "O my Lord! How shall I have a son when no man has touched me." He said: "So (will it be) for Allah creates what He wills. When He has decreed something, He says to it only: "Be" –and it is.

3:49. And will make him a Messenger to the children of Israel saying: "I have come to you with a sign from your Lord, … and I heal him who was born blind, and the leper, and I bring the dead to life by Allah's leave.

10/ Jonah – Yunis
31. Say: "Who is it that sustains you (in life) from the sky and from the earth? Or who is it that has power over hearing and sight? And who is it that brings out the living from the dead and the dead from the living? And who is it that rules and regulates all affairs?" They will soon say, "Allah"?

Jesus raised the dead to life. (Imran 49) He could only do that by the power of God as God's Son.

Imran 3:50. And I have come confirming that which was before me of the Torah, and to make lawful to you part of what was forbidden to you, and I have come to you with a proof from your Lord. So fear Allah and obey me.

3:51. Truly! Allah is my Lord and your Lord, so worship Him. This is the Straight path.

Hebrews 1:8 About the Son, however, God said: "Your kingdom, O God, will last for ever and ever! You rule over your people with justice.

5/ Jesus died and rose from the dead

19/ Mary – Maryam
33. "So Peace is on me the day I was born, the day that I die and the day that I shall be raised up to life (again)!"
34. Such (was) Jesus the son of Mary: (it is) a statement of truth, about which they (vainly) dispute.
35. It is not befitting to (the majesty of) Allah that He should beget a son. Glory be to Him! When he determines a matter, He only says to it, "be" and it is.

God sent his Son to die for our sins, who are we to try to work out how God goes about His business. Indeed God can decree a thing and it is done!

4/ Women – N-Nisa
157. That they said in (boast), "We killed Christ Jesus the son of Mary, the Apostle of Allah" -but they killed him not, nor crucified him, but so it was made to appear to them, and those who differ therein are full of doubts, with no (certain) knowledge, but only conjecture to follow, for of a surety they killed him not:-
158. Nay, Allah raised him up unto Himself; …
159. And there is none of the People of the Book but must believe in him before his death;

There is a clear contradiction here, for one verse says that Jesus was raised up to heaven without first dying and the other that he died. Jesus in fact died on the cross first, was raised from the dead, walked the earth for 40 days and was then taken up to heaven.

6/ Jesus Christ came with signs and wonders as clear proof of who he is.

43/ Ornaments of Gold – Al-Zukhruf
43:63. When Jesus came with Clear Signs, he said: "Now have I come to you with Wisdom, and in order to make clear to you some of the (points)on which ye dispute: therefore fear Allah and obey me.

3/ Imrans
3:49 …I have come to you with a Sign from your Lord, … and I heal those born blind, and the lepers, and I quicken (bring to life) the dead, by Allah's leave;

7/ The Holy Spirit in the Koran

The Ladders – Al-Ma'arij
70:3 No power can hinder God from punishing them. He is the Lord of the Ladders, by which the angels and the Spirit will ascend to Him in one day: a day whose space is fifty thousand years.

Unless the Holy Spirit is separate, as well as part of God, who is running the earth while the Spirit goes up and down the ladders? Maybe that is why God is referred to as We. One God but three distinct parts of God. God the Father, God the Son Jesus Christ and God the Holy Spirit. For the Spirit of God moved upon the earth as it was created, just as the Holy Spirit moved upon Mary when Jesus was conceived in her womb.

8/ Have the Old and New Testament of the Bible been changed?

3:3 Imran He has revealed to you the Book with the truth, confirming the scriptures which preceded it; for He has already revealed the Torah and the Gospel for the guidance of men, and the distinction between right and wrong.

6:34 Cattle – Al-An'am …for none can change the decrees of Allah …

10:64 Jonah – Yunis … the word of Allah cannot be changed …

5:46 The Table -Al-Maida And in their footsteps We sent Jesus the son of Mary, confirming the Law that had come before him: We sent them the Gospel: therein was guidance an light, and confirmation of the Law that had come before him: a guidance and an admonition to those who fear Allah.

The above verses show that the Old and New Testament books are sound and have not been tampered with, in them is to be found salvation. The Koran's purpose was to confirm and protect the Bible. The Table 68, Say: "O People of the Book! ye shall have no ground to stand upon unless you stand fast by the Law, the Gospel, and all the revelation that has come to you from Lord."

The Koran clearly states that one should follow the books contained in the Old and New Testaments and that these books were sound and trustworthy.

9/ Muslims are commanded to read the Torah and the Gospels

5/ The Table – Al-Ma'idah

5:44 We have revealed the Torah, in which there is guidance and light.

5:46 After them We sent forth Jesus son of Mary, confirming the Torah already revealed, and gave him the Gospel, in which there is guidance and light, corroborating what was revealed before it in the Torah: a guide and an admonition to the righteous.

6/ Cattle – An'am
6:154 Moreover, We gave Moses the Book, completing (Our favour) to those who would do right, and explaining all things in detail, –and a guide and a mercy, that they might believe in the meeting with their Lord.
6:155 And this is a Book which We have revealed as a blessing: so follow it and be righteous, that you may receive mercy:

3/The Imrans – Al-Imran
3:3 "He has revealed to you the Book with the truth, confirming the scriptures which preceded it; for He had already revealed the Torah and the Gospel for the guidance of men and the distinction between right and wrong."

An extract from Mustafa's testimony taken from the internet.

Mustafa found while studying the Koran, that the commonly held belief in the Islamic world that the Bible was corrupted was not true.

"If the world of Islam of Islam's teachings on this subject were true (that is, that the Bible had been corrupted), and given that fact that such a thing was always being taught in Islamic education, it must mean that the Koran is wrong. I thought, "God forbid, I knew that this was just not possible. I wondered where this idea could have come from?" God said, "Nobody can ever change my words," "No it was changed." this couldn't be possible. While many verses in the Koran say that the Christian holy books were sound and were protected by God, other verses said that these same books had been corrupted. Thus there was a clear contradiction. Verses that said it had been changed and verses that said it had not been changed were both present in the Koran. It was just not possible for God to make such a contradiction.

10/ The free gift of salvation versus good works.

Muslims believe that they go to heaven through good works, especially the giving of alms and prayer.

2/ The Cow -Al-Baqarah 112. Indeed those that surrender themselves to God and do good works shall be rewarded by their Lord:
7/ The Heights – Al-Araf 8. And the weighing on that day (Day of Resurrection) will be the true (weighing). So as for those whose scale (of good deeds) will be heavy, they will be the successful (by entering Paradise).

Christians believe that they are saved and go to heaven through their faith in Jesus Christ. Salvation is a gift.

John 3:16 says: For God loved the world so much that he gave his only Son, so that everyone who believes in him may not die but have eternal life.

Romans 3:22 God puts people right through their faith in Jesus Christ. God does this to all who believe in Christ, because there is no difference at all: 23) everyone has sinned and is far away from God's saving presence. 24) But by the free gift of God's grace all are put right with him through Christ Jesus who sets them free.

Do you believe in a God at all? If you don't then whatever I have said before is worthless for you, but if you believe that there is a God, why don't you ask Him to show you the right way! By going to the Mosque it proves that you believe in God. Wouldn't it be a good idea, to find out, if you are worshipping God the way he wants to be worshipped? In other words, are you wasting your time following God in a wrong way? At the end of your life do you want to find out that you have been going the wrong way?

As the best creation of God you have been given a mind, which can think and distinguish between right and wrong. So take your time to read all the books mentioned in the Koran and find out for yourself what is the truth.

In the meantime, if you wish, come before God today and ask Jesus Christ to come into your heart. Ask him to forgive you for your sins. Ask your Heavenly Father to fill you with his Holy Spirit and accept the free gift of salvation. You cannot work your way to heaven. You have nothing to lose, but a lot to gain, give it a go.
