I have been in the Royal Thai Army for the last 32 years. Recently I retired as Chief of Defense Affairs Division, National Defense Institute of the Royal Thai Army.

After being raised in a Thai Buddhist family, I joined the military. The Thai army “way of life” is formally and informally full of Buddhist religious practices. Moreover, to have the best chance for promotion an officer must be Buddhist.

I had grown up and lived in the Chinese Sukhawadee Cemetery which is located in Nong Khae District, Saraburi Province, for 40 years. This cemetery is under the supervision of Thailand’s Poleng Chinese Association. My ancestors were Chinese emigrated from Mainland China (with the last name “Lim”) and settled down in Chonburi Province. At 7 years of age, I had since learned Feng Chui science and astrology from various teachers who had performed spiritual ceremonies in the cemetery.

Wilaiwan Rattan-u-sakul (nicknamed Hua) is a Chinese descendant living in Thailand. She is the eldest of 5 younger brothers and sisters. For the Chinese, the eldest daughter usually helps her mother do all household chores as well as taking care of her younger siblings; however, Hua still had the chance to go to school. She loved studying and learning. Her parents owned a medium-sized grocery store, thus being able to support their children’s education.

Vichai was born into “Nam Phud” family, in Trang Province (a Southern Province of Thailand). This last name was specially created according to Nam Phud District by a former governor for his father as a result of his various benefits rendered to the Province. Later Vichai’s family name was changed to “Trangkhasombat” and it has been his last name since.
