The Dangers of Applied Calvinism

I want to preface all this by saying that some people who would call themselves Calvinists or Reformed Theologians are NOT what I would call practitioners of "Applied Calvinism". They are actually very loving and caring people who believe in the Great Commission and do something for it. At the same time, some Pentecostals and Arminians certainly seem to be "Applied Calvinists" in the sense that they show little or no concern for the state of humanity and the glory of God. What interests God is FAITH that results in OBEDIENCE to the revealed Will of God.

Theistic Determinism, Compatibilism vs Free Will

Calvinists are theistic determinists. The Westminster Confession of Faith, declares that

"God, from all eternity, did, by the most wise and holy counsel of His own will, freely, and unchangeably ordain whatsoever comes to pass” (Westminster Confession of Faith, III/i).

Did you hear that? They are saying that God unchangeable ordained whatever comes to pass! This means:

Every child molestation was ordained by God.

Every war was ordained by God.

All war crimes were ordained by God.

The unbelief of man was ordained by God.

Does Romans 9 Teach Calvinism?

If any passage of the Bible clearly teaches Calvinism, it would be Romans chapter 9. Calvin himself referred to Romans
9:6-24 as "that memorable passage from Paul which alone ought easily to compose all controversy [concerning election] among sober and compliant children of God". I must confess I have at times been disturbed by what seemed to be the implications of Romans chapter 9, and also parts of Romans chapter 11, concerning the love, justice and goodness of God.

Theology of Righteousness in Acts 10 – The Story of Cornelius

I wonder how neatly the story of Acts chapter 10 and 11 fits into your theology. In much traditional protestant theology, especially amongst the followers of Calvin, there is a strong belief if the "total depravity" of those who are not regenerate by means of the gospel. The idea here is that nothing an unregenerate person thinks or does is actually clean or righteous. There are also those in various traditions who believe that without water baptism, a person is not born again.

Eternal Security – Dare we believe it?

Back in 1997 I spoke with a pastor and the subject of the eternal security
of the believer came up. This pastor is a lovely, gracious man and is doing
many things to reach people in the community with the gospel. He obviously
loves the Lord and loves people. When I questioned him regarding the contents
of one of the theological books he was reading, it came out that he believed
in the doctrine that a truly born again believer is eternally secure, no
matter what he may do from that time on.
