The Time Twisters: Abortion and Evolution
Time is a great mystery that no human fully understands. Nevertheless, this lack of understanding does not stop the twisting of the conception of time for self-serving, nefarious purposes; in fact, it facilitates it. For whatever is incompletely understood is always easier to twist around to serve unscrupulous agenda. Even the Scriptures are not immune to this. Peter, in writing about the apostle Paul’s letters says that in them “are some things that are hard to understand, which the ignorant and unsettled twist, as they also do to the other Scriptures, to their own destruction” (2 Peter. 3:16 WEB).
Therefore, if the precious word of God is not above such attacks, we should not be surprised that other areas also suffer the same. Two in particular are looked at here, because they have such huge, widespread impact in our world today: abortion and evolution. When this is done, some surprising and revealing commonalities surface regarding the mystery of time. The issue of abortion is discussed first, for reasons that will become clear later.
ABORTION
The very first thing I want to say regarding abortion is that nothing here is meant to judge those who have had abortions. We are all in need of his forgiveness for the wrongs we have done in life. Abortion, like all other sins, can be forgiven, and we all are sinners and all need God’s forgiveness. “For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God” (Rom. 3:23).
Nevertheless, make no mistake about it, abortion is wrong.
“Now we know that God’s judgment against those who do such things is based on truth” (Rom. 2:2 NIV). And the truth about abortion is this:
Blindness, lack of sight, is one of the key components of those who advocate abortion. They cannot see–or else do not want to see–beyond what they can see. That is, all they see is the present, not the future. They see only a tiny speck of human tissue presently within the womb, not the future, fully-developed human being which it will become. For, if left alone, without intervention by other human beings, such as an abortionist, what happens to that blob of tissue? It develops into a human being. To call it anything less is to be blind, to be willfully ignorant of the change which time will make to that which now does not look like a human being but only a few cells of tissue–ignorant or deliberately blind, not wanting to see what one knows full well it will become.
Thus the twisting of time becomes a critical factor in justifying abortion. One dare not look ahead in time because then one is confronted with the stark reality of the awful nature of what takes place in abortion: the premature ending of a human life. Therefore, to ease the conscience and justify that which clearly is against conscience and the laws of nature and God, time must be twisted so that the future is blurred and the past erased. Only the present exists–and even that is sought to be changed to conform to the individual’s desire to change the reality of that moment (with child) by removing that which stands in the way of the desired reality (to be without child). Deliverance is sought.
But in seeking deliverance through abortion, this deliverance becomes an unnatural event through human intervention rather than a natural deliverance through childbirth. It is yet one more instance of human beings seeking to alter reality through human circumvention of reality in order to serve their own interests rather than God’s:
“And what was the one God seeking? Godly offspring” (Mal. 2:15 ESV).
But in order to do this, a twisting of time, a change in the perception of time, must take place, becoming blind to the future in order to justify the present and forget the past. This is the twisting of time in abortion. It is just the opposite for evolution.
EVOLUTION
Whereas the abortionist view requires ignoring the future and altering the present in order to forget the past, the evolutionist does just the opposite. Here, the past is all-important, for unless the past is seen to conform to the tenets of evolution, there is no substance to that worldview. For the abortion viewpoint, the past is to be forgotten; for the evolutionist, the past is to be revered as all-important.
Time is extremely important to the evolutionists’ worldview. Everything about their whole concept of reality depends upon a certain belief system, with time the absolutely crucial bedrock upon which that whole system is built and upon which it depends. According to this belief, given enough time, anything can happen, even a whole universe come into being out of nothing and for no reason. Because this belief system is so strongly based on such a foundation of time, it is not surprising that time is revered so highly by its adherents. Time serves as one of the gods of evolutionists. Without it, they have nothing. In order for things to exist and to progress to higher levels, an enormous amount of time must be available. Without time, there is no existence, nothing.
This outlook on reality, this belief system, is exactly opposite to that which the Scriptures proclaim. There we are told that God created time (Rev. 4:11, Acts 15:18) and is not subject to it, but rather that it is subject to his power and command. Whereas evolution says that billions of years are essential for what exists to have come into existence, the Bible refutes that, declaring that all was created simply by God speaking his Word (Ps. 148:1-5, Ps. 33:6).
There is another passage from the Bible regarding this that is saved for last, because it goes beyond simply declaring this truth about reality and how things came to be, to a further aspect that needs examining concerning those who proclaim a false concept of reality:
“‘All these things my hand has made, and so all these things came to be,’ declares the LORD. ‘But this is the one to whom I will look: he who is humble and contrite in spirit and trembles at my word‘” (Is. 66:2 ESV).
There is no humility in evolution but rather a pride that declares that all came about without God. Neither is there any contrition for holding such a view, but rather it is proclaimed ever more boldly. That is because such a view comes from a defiant spirit and a heart that does not tremble at God’s Word. Therefore, at the end, God will not look upon such with favor, for he is the One who is “of purer eyes than to behold evil, and canst not look on iniquity” (Habakkuk 1:13 KJV). Rather, he will cast them out of his presence and sight (Mt. 25:41).
“Everyone who swears falsely will be banished” (Zech. 5:3 NIV). And what is adhering to the worldview of evolution but a swearing to the truth of that which is false? Therefore all such will learn what it means to tremble at the word of God.
“My flesh trembles for fear of you. I am afraid of your judgments” (Ps. 119:120 WEB).
“They will undergo the penalty of eternal destruction, away from the presence of the Lord and from the glory of his strength” (2 Th. 1:9 NET).
The bitter irony of this punishment for those who demand fathomless eons of time for existence to come about, without God, is that they will spend eternity existing without God, apart from him in eternal death just as they were apart from him in this brief life. This is the penalty for seeking to twist the mysterious thing called time for one’s own purposes, when God created it, as he did everything else, for his own purposes.
“The LORD works everything for its own ends–even the wicked for the day of disaster” (Pr. 16:4 NET).
Thus time, which is so revered by evolutionists who see no need for any other god than this idol, will see that god become that which imprisons them forever in darkness. Their false god will be destroyed by the true God.
“The gods who did not make the heavens and the earth shall perish from the earth and from under the heavens” (Jer. 10:11 ESV).
Perish. Those who invoke the god of time to create their false vision of reality called evolution will perish when their god perishes beneath the hand of God.
Now, perhaps there is need for one note regarding this. In no way is what has been said here meant to imply that all evolutionists will go to hell. Surrendering one’s soul to Jesus as Lord and Savior by faith is the determining criterion for heaven or hell. When the word evolutionist is used here, it is meant those who believe that there is no god but time and chance (or anything else other than the God of the Bible). There are those Christians who do not deny that God is behind all that exists, but, for whatever reason, also believe in some form of evolution. I strongly disagree with them, but this discourse is meant for those who are blatantly against the Bible’s plainly stated account of creation by an infinite God, and who worship time rather than the creator of time.
“They exchanged the truth of God for a lie, and worshiped and served created things rather than the Creator–who is forever praised. Amen” (Rom. 1:25 NIV).
CONCLUSION
The matter of trying to manipulate time to bolster one’s knowingly false viewpoint of reality is a common trait amongst those who do not like reality as it stands, whether that reality be a cosmos vast beyond comprehension or a tiny part of that cosmos within a womb that likewise is beyond full comprehension.
“When I look at your heavens, the work of your fingers, the moon and the stars, which you have set in place, what is man that you are mindful of him and the son of man that you care for him?” (Ps. 8:3-4 ESV).
“For you formed my inward parts; you knitted me together in my mother’s womb. I praise you, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made. Wonderful are your works; my soul knows it very well. My frame was not hidden from you, when I was being made in secret, intricately woven in the depths of the earth” (Ps. 139:13-15 ESV).
Here the Scriptures also make the connection between the very large and the very small, the far and the near–and both extremes share the common thread of time–from that of the child in the womb: “Your eyes saw my unformed substance; in your book were written, every one of them, the days that were formed for me, when as yet there was none of them” (Ps. 139:16 ESV)–to that of the huge universe into which that child has been placed by the creator to live:
“Lord, you have been our dwelling place throughout all generations. Before the mountains were born or you brought forth the earth and the world, from everlasting to everlasting you are God. You turn men back to dust, saying, ‘Return to dust, O sons of men.’ For a thousand years in your sight are like a day that has just gone by, or like a watch in the night” (Ps. 90:1-4 NIV).
It really is a human being being aborted. How can it be a human being? Look at it. Those opposed to abortion do look at it–but they see it not only as it is now but as it will knowingly become in time. They do not ignore time as do the abortionists. And herein lies the paradox. Those who believe in abortion ignore time because they know that it will show their claim to be false that it is only a few cells they are removing, that time will prove them wrong if given the chance to have its way. Therefore, they do not allow time that chance. They remove a portion of reality from the reality of time, thinking that that is that.
So, on the one hand, we have evolutionists who do not want God interfering with their worldview, and so they imagine that chance and time have brought all into creation. And on the other hand are the abortionists, who also do not want God to interfere, but take the opposite tack of limiting time so that they can take something out of creation, the innocent life of the youngest.
“They band together against the life of the righteous and condemn the innocent to death” (Ps. 94:21 ESV).
Again, a note needs to be said here about making a distinction in using the word abortion. Certainly no ill will is meant against those who have tragically had an abortion without realizing the full impact of that choice. Nor is anything meant against those who do not yet realize what it is they are doing in providing abortions. But for those who do know (and it doesn’t take much examination of the issue to arrive at a renunciation of it as wrong) but still refuse to stop this abominable act–yes, this writing is provided to confront the willful disobedience to God and truth.
What, then, is the right conclusion on which to end this look at the twisting of time to justify these two false worldviews of abortion and evolution? Two points seem to suggest themselves naturally. One is that truth, as always, is to be accepted, as revealed by God in his Word, no matter what other desires for untruth we may have, be it how the universe came into existence or how one tiny part of that universe comes to exist. Embrace truth, reject falsehood.
The other point is that if this is not done, then be prepared to face the consequences. For God has solemnly declared in his Word that those who twist time, something he created, for their own purposes, rather than allowing it to stand unaltered for those divine purposes, will suffer just recompense for that intervening in his eternal design. For the time will come when “there should be time no longer” (Rev. 10:6 KJV). Other translations use the word “delay”, but that is no problem, as the end result is that all things will then have reached their final point of consumation. There will then be no more time for repentence, no time for accepting the truth about reality and God and time, no more time for anything except existing forever in the reality where time exists no more, only eternity.
Given, then, that this is the true nature of reality and time, what should be the proper response of human beings? We are told plainly in God’s Word what our response should be:
“But the day of the Lord will come like a thief, and then the heavens will pass away with a roar, and the heavenly bodies will be burned up and dissolved, and the earth and the works that are done on it will be exposed. Since all these things are thus to be dissolved, what sort of people ought you to be in lives of holiness and godliness” (2 Peter 3:10-11 ESV).
One of the chief ways we do this is by respecting time as it is and not as we might wish it to be. We must not try to twist time around to serve our own purposes and desires, but accept it as it is, as an unalterable record of what was, what is, and what shall be.
“In the day of prosperity be joyful, and in the day of adversity consider: God has made the one as well as the other, so that man may not find out anything that will be after him” (Ecc. 7:14 ESV).
To those who accept the abortionist view of time, and for whom the present is so important, Scripture calls out for them to shift their focus to what is really important in the present moment, surrendering to Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior:
“Behold, now is the accepted time; behold, now is the day of salvation” (2 Cor. 6:2 KJV).
Do it now, recognize the real importance of the moment–or else the moment will slip away for ever, much to your eternal dismay. For who knows what those now-missing children would have become? perhaps even prophets telling you of what the future holds for those who refuse to accept the invitation of God to trust him with their future instead of trying to mold it for themselves. How true the lament of Jesus’ holds for such, even as it did for Jerusalem of his day:
“O Jerusalem, Jerusalem, the city that kills the prophets and stones those who are sent to it! How often would I have gathered your children together as a hen gathers her brood under her wings, and you would not!” (Mt. 23:37 ESV).
And to the evolutionists who seek to alter the past in order to avoid the future and the future judgment of God–neither of which can be altered for those who seek to avoid them–to them, hear the words of Him who never changes:
“I am the Alpha and the Omega, the first and the last, the beginning and the end” (Rev. 22:13 ESV).
We must not twist time or the Word of God. Instead, may all rejoice with the psalmist in the precious gift of time, and say with him:
“My times are in thy hand: Deliver me from the hand of mine enemies, and from them that persecute me. Make thy face to shine upon thy servant: Save me for thy mercies’ sake” (Ps. 31:15-16 KJV).
