Are Christians happy? I've noticed that some very sincere Christian people are actually NOT so happy. We can have a zeal for God's will AS WE UNDERSTAND IT and still not be happy. We can heal the sick, cast out demons, and make a difference through missionary impact and STILL not be happy.
Happiness does not come as many people think it does. Many people have a dream, a vision, a plan for their lives. Many people who have this believe that when the dream is fulfilled, they will achieve happiness.
I'm sorry to burst your bubble, but it doesn't work out this way. Certainly there can be a fleeting sense of fulfilment when a dream comes to pass – but it can soon be followed by a sense of emptiness – because now the thing we focused on is no longer there for us to work on! We need another dream, another vision, another "carrot" to keep us working hard.
And in the case where God does not see fit to allow us to achieve the dream, or we mess up, or for whatever reason it doesn't happen, people can become profoundly UNHAPPY.
The Word of God teaches us a VERY SIMPLE formula for personal happiness, and its so simple, we can easily miss it. We read book after book on all the issues we face thinking that if only we could solve this or that problem we would finally be happy. But all too often the sought after happiness eludes us.
The Bibile simply says:
"He that handles a matter wisely shall find good: and whosoever trusts in the LORD, happy is he." (Proverbs 16:20)
If you are NOT happy right now, you need to ask yourself this question: "Am I really TRUSTING in the Lord?"
The question is NOT whether you are TRYING to do the right thing.
Neither is it sufficient to TRY to trust God.
Sometimes people have had a bad experience with their natural father, or both of their parents. This damages their ability to trust in general, but especially their ability to trust God. And this will surely lead to unhappiness.
Trusting occurs where we allow ourselves to REST, believing that God will work to somehow make things good in our life.
Trusting occurs when we believe that God is working all things for our good.
Trusting occurs when we are in the habit of continually THANKING God the Father for all things.
The great promise to those who trust God is that they will be happy.
Happiness is better than misery and depression.
So let go of your uptightness and begin to TRUST God. You won't regret it. Because God is faithful.
