I want to take a shot at answering you questions since this is something that I researched recently. I had different people telling me different things about what happens immediately after you die so I went to the ultimate authority on the subject; Scripture.

What happens to the spirit of man when one dies?

When a true believer in Christ dies he or she is immediately judged and taken to Heaven to be with Jesus. 2 Cor 5:6-8 “Therefore we are always confident and know that as long as we are at home in the body we are away from the Lord. We live by faith, not by sight. We are confident, I say, and would prefer to be away from the body and at home with the Lord.” So to be away from the body is to be with Jesus in Heaven. In Luke, Jesus tells the thief on the cross “Truly I tell you, today you will be with me in Paradise”. Jesus, in telling the story of the rich man and Lazarus, tells us Lazarus was immediately taken to be with Abraham and the rich man went to hell.

What is heaven and hell and what is the difference between hell and lake of fire?

The Bible does not give us a detailed description of Heaven because it is beyond our realm of reasoning. We don’t have anything on earth to compare it too. Jesus tells us in John 3:12 “I have spoken to you of earthly things and you do not believe; how then will you believe if I speak of heavenly things?” Paul tells us in 2nd Corinthians 12:4 that he “was caught up to paradise and heard inexpressible things, things that no one is permitted to tell.” One thing we do know is that we will be with the Lord and it will be a wonderful and infinitely better than the alternative.

Hell is like a holding cell for prisoners who are awaiting trial. Everyone who is not in Christ when they die go to hell awaiting the Great White Throne Judgment. They rich man begs Abraham to send Lazarus to dip his finger in water and cool his tongue because he was tormented in the flame. So Hell doesn’t sound like a very nice place.

Jesus throws the beast and false prophet in the lake of fire upon his return. One thousand years later Satan is thrown into the lake of fire. Then comes the Great White Throne Judgment were the dead are raised and whoever’s name is not written in the book of life is thrown into the lake of fire. We are told in Revelations chapter twenty that they will be tormented forever and ever. So the lake of fire doesn’t sound like a very nice place either.

Can a man die and come back again?

The answer to that question is yes and no. We see several examples in Scripture of prophets, Jesus and his Apostles raising people from the dead. Jesus also rose from the dead. So, yes a man can die and come back again. No in the case of reincarnation, Heb 9:27 “Just as people are destined to die once, and after that to face judgment.”
